Known Issues

The printer won't print

If the printer is turned on and nothing happens (all indicators do not light), turn off printer and use the following steps :

  • Make sure the power cord is plugged into the power connector on the printer
  • Make sure the power cord is plugged into the outlet.
  • Turn on the printer. If the printer is connected properly the POWER, ON-LINE, and HQ(or HS) indicators will light, and the print head will be in the home position.

Indicators light but printer won't print

  • Make sure the printer is online.
  • Check interface cable.
  • Make sure the computer is set up correctly for your printer.
  • Make sure the paper is loaded properly into the sheet feeder.
  • Ensure the BJ cartridge is installed properly(ensure the protection tape is removed from the print head).

ONLINE, HS and HQ indicators are blinking

A RAM/ROM error has probably occurred.

  • Press POWER switch to turn off the printer.
  • Wait 15 seconds, press POWER switch to turn on the printer. If the problem has cleared, the ON LINE will blink for a few seconds, then light. The print head will be in the home position. If the problem has not been cleared, the printer requires servicing.

Error indicator lights

  • Make sure printer is not out of paper.
  • Make sure a paper jam does not occur.

Paper won't load into the printer

  • Make sure the paper selection lever is set to the correct position:
    • For plain paper, set it to the rear
    • For envelope or thick paper, set it to the front
    • For manual feed, set it to the front

For manual loading, be sure to insert the paper to the interior of the sheet feeder and hold it for one second when printer is online. If the paper is not inserted far enough, the paper won't load.

Multiple sheets are loading into the printer

  • Make sure the paper is not sticking together. Fan the paper before loading it in the sheet feeder.
  • Make sure the sheet feeder does not contain too much paper. Remove a few sheets of paper from the sheet feeder.
  • If different paper types are loaded in the sheet feeder, load just one paper type.

Paper is loaded skewed (Printing is skewed)

Make sure the paper is loaded squarely into the sheet feeder and the right side of the paper is aligned against the right wall of the sheet feeder with the left side of the paper aligned against the paper guide.

Envelopes won't load

  • Make sure the paper selection lever is set to the front
  • Make sure the envelope is loaded properly, head first, flap facing down, and the right side of the envelope is aligned against the right wall of the sheet feeder with the left side of the paper aligned against the paper guide.
  • For manual loading, be sure the envelope is pushed until it stops in the interior of the sheet feeder.

Paper does not eject after printing

When the printer does not eject the paper after printing, press the ONLINE switch to turn the printer off-line, then press and hold the LF/FF switch for one second to eject the paper.

Paper jams occur

The ERROR indicator will light and the printer will go off-line if a paper jam occurs. Clear the paper jam as follows:

  • Press the POWER switch to turn the printer off
  • Gently pull the paper out with one hand while holding down the printer with the other hand
  • If the paper tears off inside the printer, open the front cover, remove the paper left inside.
  • Press the POWER switch to turn the printer back on. The POWER, ONLINE, HQ (or HS) indicators will light and the print head will move to the home position.

Print quality problems

The printer has three print modes with different print densities. The HS mode density is low, HQ mode is high, and the density of SHQ is the highest of all. If you use HS mode and are not getting satisfactory character density, try HQ or SHQ mode. For copier paper, it has a "right" side and a "wrong" side. If the print quality is poor, try turning the paper over and using the other side. If print quality is unsatisfactory (e.g. blurred characters), check to make sure that you are using the correct kind of paper and printing in the correct printing area (see section of manual on "Recommended Paper"). If ink gets on the printer platen, the reverse side of the printed page will have smudges. If this occurs, clean the platen by feeding a few sheets of paper through the printer. If white streaks or missing dots appear on printed pages, perform the print head cleaning operation.

If quality is not crisp and clear after cleaning the print head, repeat the head cleaning procedure again. If output still isn't satisfactory after five consecutive print head cleanings, replace the BJ cartridge.

If the following print quality problems are found in the entire printing area, check the most probable cause in order as listed below :

  • Smudged - Try a different type of paper.
  • Blurred - Try a different type of paper.
  • Faded - Perform print head cleaning or replace the ink cartridge.
  • White Streaks - Perform print head cleaning.
  • Dots Missing - Perform print head cleaning.
  • Irregular Dots - Perform print head cleaning.

If the printout includes ink-stained areas when printing large black areas of print (high-density graphics for example), using the SHQ mode continuously, perform the following steps:

  • Print it again using the HQ mode (or HS mode).
  • If Step 1 does not solve the problem, try to set the paper-thickness adjustment lever to the right position, and print it again.

If the printout includes thin stains around double-high characters printed in BJ10-mode, try to set the paper-thickness adjustment lever to the right position and print again.

Printout is Wrong

If your print out does not appear as you expect, check that the printer control mode matches the printer driver selected.

Characters on the screen do not match the printer characters

Many graphics characters and special symbols are produced by different ASCII codes according to the make of computer and printer. Compare the character set in your computer manual with the printer character set shown in Appendix A of the manual. Set the correct character table and printer control mode using the printer's DIP switches.

Printer is printing beyond the page edge (Printer prints only part of each line)

  • Make sure paper is aligned correctly.
  • Check software's right margin setting.
  • Check DIP switch 1 setting (Horizontal Print Position), For Letter size, set to OFF, For envelope size, set to OFF, For A4 size, set to ON.

Printer prints incorrect number of lines on a page

  • Check DIP switch 4 setting (Page Length) - For Letter size, set to OFF, For A4 size, set to ON, For envelope, set to OFF.
  • Check software top margin setting.
  • Make sure paper is loaded correctly.

Printer is not using the font you selected with the DIP switches

Software is overriding the DIP switch settings. Change the initialization string that the software sends.

Computer indicates a device time-out

  • Make sure the printer is online.
  • Make sure printer cable is not loose or disconnected.

How to install BJ200 printer driver from vendor-provided disk.

Disk cannot be installed from Windows. Exit to Dos, and type "CANON" at the A:\ prompt. This will decompress the drivers and write them onto the disc (disc must not be write-protected). Then install the printer from within Windows Control Panel, using the "Install Unlisted or Updated Driver" option.

Print head moves, but nothing prints

This usually occurs when a new printer cartridge has been inserted. Run the print head cleaning process which should always be run when a new cartridge is inserted. Place a piece of kitchen towel over the print head and blow in the hole located on the side of the print head. This should force ink through the print head onto the towel. Dab the cartridge with a damp cloth to clear the blockage. Re-seat the cartridge to ensure the connections are correct. Ensure that the printer is switched off correctly. Use the switch on the printer, not the wall socket. This will ensure the print head is closed correctly and does not block up or dry out.

Power light flashes and the printer does not work

Try removing and reinstalling the cartridge.

The printer does not print

There are many reasons why it may not print. Listed below are some of the tests you can perform. Run a self test to establish printer is a working unit. If this does not work the printer is faulty. Exit to DOS and print out a text file. EG PRINT AUTOEXEC.BAT. This should then print to the printer. If it does not either there is a printer port, computer LPT1 port or printer cable problem. exchange the cable and try again. Test the printer on another computer. If it does print it is a software problem. If rubbish is printed from the DOS prompt. Again it could be printer port, computer LPT1 port or printer cable problem. exchange the cable and try again. Test the printer on another computer. Ensure that the printer is plugged in and connected correctly.

Text is split

  • In CONTROL PANEL/PRINTERS, Disable Print Manager.
  • In PRINTER SETUP, set Resolution to 360x360.
  • In PRINTER SETUP, set Dithering to Coarse.
  • In CONTROL PANEL/PRINTERS/CONNECT, set Fast Printing Direct to Port to Enabled.
  • Use a standard VGA screen driver.

Paper error light comes on when switching on printer

Take any paper out of the printer and start the printer again. Insert the paper and press on line. Ensure the paper is inserted correctly. Far enough over to the left if no sheetfeeder attached over the right if the sheetfeeder attached. Check the DIP switches are set correctly and the correct emulation has been set on the PC.
